Permissible B-1 Business Activities

1. General Provisions

An applicant for B-1 status should be engaged in business activities other than the performance of skilled or unskilled labor. A B-1 visa is not to be used for the purpose of obtaining or engaging in employment while in the U.S.i An individual may enter the United States to:

  1. Engage in commercial transactions that do not involve gainful employment in the United States;

  2. Negotiate contracts;

  3. Consult with business associates;

  4. Litigate;

  5. Participate in scientific, educational, professional or business conventions, conferences, or seminars; or

  6. Undertake independent research.
